The wrong marketing partner costs more than the monthly fee. It costs you time, it costs you data, and it can leave you convinced that marketing does not work when the real problem was how it was run.
A simple example of the maths
This is an illustration, not a client story. Say a business pays an agency R15,000 a month for four months. Nothing is tracked properly, the landing page has no clear contact action, and the ads reach the wrong people. After four months the business has R60,000 less, four enquiries it cannot trace to anything, and no data that helps the next agency. That works out to R15,000 for each enquiry, before a single sale. The money is only part of the damage. The lost months and the loss of trust matter too.
Warning signs before you sign
- Vague promises. “We will increase your visibility” tells you nothing. Ask what will be measured and by when.
- No tracking plan. If they cannot explain how you will see calls, forms and sales, you will not be able to judge their work.
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. Anyone who guarantees position number one is not being honest.
- Locked in contracts. A long contract with heavy exit penalties suggests they do not expect to keep you on results.
- The same plan for everyone. A plumber and a software company need different strategies.
- No interest in your numbers. A good partner asks what a customer is worth and what you need the work to return.
- Your accounts in their name. You should own your domain, your ad accounts and your analytics.
Signs of a good partner
- They set up tracking before spending anything.
- They match the channel to your goal and say so when a channel does not suit you.
- They tell you the honest timeline, including what the first three months will and will not show.
- They report in business terms: leads, sales and cost per lead.
- They review the numbers monthly and change things based on them.
- They are happy for you to leave with everything you own.
Questions to ask
- How will we measure success, and what will I see each month?
- What does the first month look like?
- Who owns the accounts, the website and the data?
- What happens if we do not hit the targets?
- Can I speak to a current client?
If you start with a short, clearly scoped engagement rather than a long contract, a good partner earns the longer relationship.
