SEO for Local Services in South Africa: How Durban Dentists, Plumbers and Agencies Get Found First

You do not need to rank across the whole country. For most local businesses, the goal is to be found when someone in your city searches for what you do.

A plumber in Durban cares about “plumber Durban”. A dentist in Johannesburg cares about “dentist near me”. An accountant in Cape Town cares about people searching for an accountant they can visit. That is local search, and it works differently from ordinary Google rankings.

This guide walks through what to do, in order, and what each step should achieve.

How Google decides local results

Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your business matches what someone searched for), distance (how close you are to the person, or to the place they named) and prominence (how well known you are, based on things like reviews, links and mentions across the web).

You cannot change distance. You can work hard on the other two.

Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile right

This is the foundation. If your business is not verified on Google, you are invisible in the map results that appear above ordinary listings.

  • Claim or create your profile and complete verification.
  • Choose the right main category. This is one of the strongest signals. Be specific, for example “Plumber” rather than “Home improvement”.
  • Add secondary categories only where they are true.
  • Use your real business name. Adding keywords to it breaks Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended.
  • Fill in every field: address or service area, phone, website, opening hours, services and a clear description.
  • Add real photos of your premises, team and work. Add new ones regularly.
  • Keep hours accurate, including public holidays.
  • Respond to questions that people ask on the profile.

If you travel to customers rather than serve them from a shop, set a service area instead of showing a home address.

Step 2: Build reviews, properly

Reviews help people choose you, and they feed into how prominent Google thinks you are.

  • Ask every happy customer for a review, ideally the same week you finish the job.
  • Send a direct link by WhatsApp or email so it takes seconds.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and professionally.
  • Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google’s rules, and customers can tell.

A simple message that works: “Thanks again for choosing us. If you were happy with the work, would you mind leaving a short Google review? It helps other people find us. Here is the link.”

When a review is negative, reply politely, say what you will do to fix it, and take the detail offline. A calm reply is read by everyone who sees the review, not just the person who wrote it.

Step 3: Make your website back it up

Your site should clearly state what you do and where you do it.

  • Create a page for each main service, written for people, not search engines.
  • Where you serve distinct areas, add a page for each with real details, such as the suburbs you cover and examples of work there. Avoid copying the same text across pages and swapping the suburb name. Google treats that as thin content.
  • Put your address, phone number and a map on your contact page.
  • Make sure the site loads quickly on a phone.
  • Add local business schema so Google can read your details clearly.

Step 4: Keep your details consistent

Your business name, address and phone number should match everywhere: your website, your Google profile, social pages and directories such as Yellow Pages or industry listings. Small differences, such as “Street” versus “St” or an old phone number, confuse both Google and customers. Do a one-time clean-up, then keep it consistent.

Step 5: Earn local mentions

Links and mentions from other local sources show that your business is real and known. Good sources include:

  • Your suppliers and partners.
  • Industry associations and chambers of commerce.
  • Local news, community sites and events you sponsor.
  • Schools, charities and clubs you work with.

Quality matters more than quantity. A handful of genuine local links beats dozens of directory listings.

Step 6: Measure what happens

Your Google Business Profile shows how many people called you, asked for directions or visited your website from it. Combine that with Google Search Console, which shows what searches bring people to your site, and a way of tracking phone calls and WhatsApp clicks. Without this, you are guessing.

A 90 day plan

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: claim and complete your profile, fix your category and details.
  2. Weeks 3 to 4: clean up your details across directories and add photos.
  3. Month 2: start asking every customer for a review, and publish your service pages.
  4. Month 3: add area pages where they are genuinely different, start earning local mentions, and review your numbers.

Local search rewards consistency. Most competitors never get past the basics, so doing them well gives you an edge.

Common mistakes

  • Stuffing keywords into your business name.
  • Using a virtual office or a fake address.
  • Creating several profiles for the same business.
  • Ignoring reviews, or arguing in public.
  • Copying the same page for every suburb.
  • Leaving old opening hours or phone numbers online.

Does this apply to agencies and professionals?

Yes. Accountants, lawyers, consultants and agencies are searched for with a city attached. A complete profile with real reviews gives you a place in those results.

If you want this handled for you, our SEO packages start from about R6,500 a month. We also work with businesses in Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Bloemfontein. Or start with a diagnostic to see where you stand.
