Looking for the full picture? Our complete 2026 guide to fractional CMOs in South Africa covers costs, salary data, the first 90 days and how to choose the right person.
If your marketing needs senior leadership, hiring a full-time chief marketing officer is not the only way to get it. For many South African businesses a fractional CMO is a better fit.
What a fractional CMO is
A fractional CMO is an experienced marketing leader who works with your business for an agreed number of days each month. They set the strategy, own the plan and the numbers, and manage the people doing the work, without being a full-time employee.
The cost difference
A full-time chief marketing officer in Johannesburg is reported to cost between R1.5 million and R2.5 million a year, before benefits, tools or a team (Johannesburg salary range reported in May 2026). On top of that comes recruitment, and months of hiring and onboarding before the person is useful.
Our fractional CMO work starts at R12,000 a month for an advisor level, where you run the work and we steer, and from R20,000 a month when we take charge of the marketing week to week. It starts within weeks and you can scale it up or down as the business changes.
When a full-time hire makes sense
- Marketing is the core engine of the business and needs daily leadership.
- You have a large budget and a team of several people to manage.
- You are ready to carry the salary whether or not there is enough work that month.
When fractional makes sense
- You need strategy and accountability, not a full-time desk.
- You already have a team, an agency or freelancers, but nobody senior is steering them.
- You want to start soon and test the relationship before committing.
- Your business is growing, and a full-time executive would be too much too early.
What fractional is not
A fractional CMO does not replace every person who does the work. They direct it. If nobody is available to build the website, run the ads or create the content, you also need people for that. At Innovation by Design we bring designers, developers and ad specialists behind the role, so you are not left to find them yourself.
Warning signs in either choice
- No clear goals or targets for the first 90 days.
- No authority to make decisions, or no budget to carry them out.
- Reports full of activity but no leads, sales or cost per lead.
How to decide
Ask what you really need. If it is thinking, planning and accountability, fractional is usually enough. If it is a whole department led full time, you may be ready for a hire.
