Many Johannesburg businesses try digital marketing for a few months, see little result and decide it does not work for them. Usually the channel was fine. The setup was the problem.
These are the five mistakes we see most often, and what to do instead.
1. No measurement
Ads are running, but nobody can say which ones produced a call or a sale. Without tracking you cannot tell what is working.
Do this instead: set up Google Analytics, conversion tracking and call tracking before you spend. Know which ad, keyword or page led to each enquiry.
2. The wrong channel for the goal
Social ads for a service people only look for when they have an urgent need. Search ads for pure brand awareness. Each channel has a job, and the mismatch costs you from the first day.
Do this instead: match the channel to the goal. Google for people already searching, social for awareness and retargeting, SEO and content for steady long-term visibility.
3. Stopping too early
A single month of ads gives you almost no useful information. Campaigns need time to collect data and be improved.
Do this instead: plan for at least three to six months, and treat it as an ongoing cost, like rent.
4. Sending everyone to the homepage
A visitor clicks an ad for a specific service and lands on a general homepage. They have to hunt for what they came for, and most do not bother.
Do this instead: send each campaign to a page built for it, with one clear action.
5. A vague offer
“Learn more” and “Visit our site” are not reasons to click. People respond to something specific.
Do this instead: offer something concrete, such as a free quote, a consultation or a review of their website.
What works
- A specific goal, for example a set number of qualified enquiries a month.
- The channel that matches how your customers look for you.
- A clear offer and a page built for it.
- Tracking in place before the first rand is spent.
- A steady budget over several months.
- A monthly review where you stop what loses money and push what wins.
